Timber
By Mr. Pong Sono

Generally, timber means wood processed from log by sawing or trimming in order to use for construction, household equipment, or processing to something else. Small log processing such as pole and bolster is usually trimmed by axes. But if it is large log, it needs to cut in half or more by saw. Blade saw is the one that need to use human labor. On the other hand, saw used in a sawmill are Blade saw, Double Column Horizontal Band saw, Circular saw. Sawmill is the first industry related to wood.

Timber, for domestic market, is usually called by its purpose of use such as pole, shoulder pole, joist, floor, wall, and lath. For international market, it is usually called by its size by having the following condition. If its thickness is less than a half of its width which is less than 150 mm, it is called “Mai Na Kaeb”. If its thickness is less than a half of its width which is more than 150 mm, it is called “Mai Na Kwang”. Mai Na Kwang that does not exceed 50 mm in its thickness is called “Mai Kra Darn”. Mai Na Kwang that exceed 50 mm in its thickness is called “Mai Kra Darn Nha”. If its thickness is more than a half of its width including “Mai Leam” that has its width and thickness not exceed 225X150 mm or 250X125 mm, it is called “Mai Na Lek”. If its thickness is more than a half of its width including “Mai Leam” that has its width and thickness exceeds 225X150 mm or 250X125 mm, it is called “Mai Na Yai”. To buy or sell teak that has its thickness more than 125 mm and its width more than 175 mm, it is called “Mai Tub”. Actually, “Mai Tub” is the wood that need to be processed such as separating to boards or pass through “Mai Bang” or “Mai Laem” which means wood that has 4 faces equally. Lastly, log that is trimmed to have a square surface is called “Square log”.

Processing by the machine saw, generally, would give approximately 40-70 % of log volume depends on its size, or appearance (bend, curve, or straight). The wastes from outer surface of log due to making it round or square are call “Peek Mai”. The defect such as wood eye or crack would have to cut off. Another important part is saw dust that obtained from cutting all wood to desired dimension. The wastes of these wood will be used as a fuel to boil water, steam to drive the generator. The rest of wastes will be burned to be cinder or thrown away. However, when other industries are developed, the wastes from saw mill will be used more efficient than now. Moreover, instead of only cutting wood in the saw mill, it would be better to include other industries together such as chemical coating for wood, wood baking, and production from other woods.
